I lived and worked in New York for 15 years. Most of that time is spent in motion, traveling my subway, taxi, livery or hoofing it on foot. During the moments between you work hard, live hard and tend to interact with what is in the room with you. When you are on the streets, you're usually in the shade of the buildings you cannot get far enough away from to observe.
BUT.... if you find your way to a fire a fire escape, to the flight of stairs, and go right instead of left you go up.. to the roof. Just like every home has a key hidden under a fake rock, there is usually a key to open the final door, and a cinder block to hold the door open so don't get stranded. The roof is the place to be. It is hear you watch the sun drift out of site and see the majesty of all the building you know the elevators and doorman of, but rarely know their top treatments. You see other rooftop decks, nude sunbathers, maintenance crews smoking cigarettes and laughing aloud and you hear the symphony of the city, taxis laying on the horn as they try to be first to get into the tunnels off the island. It the absolute best.
