A middle-aged western lowland gorilla stares out from behind his wired enclosure at a sanctuary in Cameroon. Like the other animals there, he was rescued from the illegal pet and/or bushmeat trade and likely watched his family being killed for food when he was just an infant. Small enough to handle, and also to not provide much meat, infant gorillas and chimpanzees are usually considered by paochers more valuable for pets than for food. The lucky ones end up in sanctuaries where they can be well taken care of and mixed with others to form social groups, but still are stuck with a life in captivity.
