A smoky sunset atop Little Mountain just south of Parksville. We have started to see the result of all the wildfires that are currently burning in British Columbia. There are fires to the west, north and east of us right now, with no rain predicted until at least the end of August.
A synchronous meeting occurred while I was waiting for the sun to set. A firefighter from New Zealand came up to me and commented how beautiful it is here. Still in his uniform pants and T-shirt, having just come from the Coastal Fire Centre in Parksville where he and other firefighters were planning logistics to fight the many fires in our Province. It is his first visit to the Northern Hemisphere and said how he was disoriented by the difference in where he thought the sun should be. He commented on how different the wildlife is between his home and here. He said, “we only have birds”. Then I found out he was also a diver and we chatted about that for a while. We were having such a nice chat I almost missed the shot I came up to take and then it was time to go. Unfortunately I didn't get his name, but I want to thank him and his colleagues and all the other firefighters that have come to our aid and are putting their lives at risk to help us control the many, (364,000 Ha. currently burned), wildfires in our Province.
