Waterford, Ireland
Artisans at Waterford Crystal cut glass using a grinding wheel following lines that are drawn on the piece using a temporary marker. Any remnants of the marker will be removed during a later cleaning process. Each cut you see here was made using the same manual method - one cut at a time. Since the glass piece obscures the artisan's view of the grinding wheel, they must look through the bottom of the piece to make the cut. An engraved piece - especially a piece as large as this, can take days, weeks or even months to complete. A single errant cut can ruin the entire piece and the artisan must begin again. Each artisan trains for a minimum of 8 years to become a master of their craft.
