The fountain Ariège-Garonne in Toulouse, designed in 1896 by the sculptor Alexandre Laporte (1851-1904) captures the Garonne River as a heroic and triumphant woman, spreading her arms between the rocks of the Pyrenees where its source is located. The personification of the Ariège River below discharges its water through an urn, symbolizing its role as a tributary of the Garonne.

The Garonne flows in southwest France and northern Spain. It originates from the central Spanish Pyrenees to the Gironde estuary at the French port of Bordeaux – a length of 529 km, the total length extends to 602 km if one includes the Gironde estuary between the river and the sea.

The Ariège is a 162.9 km long river in the southwest of France which flows into the Garonne south of Toulouse, part of which marks the border between Andorra and France.
