Fort Macon sits at the end of Bogue Banks in North Carolina overlooking the Beaufort Inlet. The fort was constructed in the 19th century after the War of 1812 to protect the inlet against future invasions. By the time of the Civil War, the fort was mostly obsolete but still saw some limited action. Today, the fort is largely intact after years of renovation.
