Some people have asked me, what is this plant?
It is a spectacular floral stem of an American agave which marks its end of life. Photo taken in my garden in Balma ... And the photo is not taken by chance for this text as you understand after reading this below ...
"A theatrical death"
The American agave is a monocarpic plant, that is to say that the only flowering during its life will exhaust the whole plant and make it die. The suckers present all around the mother rosette should then take over and grow in turn.
The seeds released at the end of flowering as well as the seedlings sometimes present at the top of the flower stem will also ensure the progeny of the plant.
After fifteen years of life, you will see a funny conical stem appear in the center of your agave. You will see its vigor and very rapid growth. The stem will then grow several meters in a few months to reach a total height of about 10 meters. It will then branch out and bear spreading panicles of greenish flowers without much aesthetic interest. This flowering occurs in summer and can last more than a month. Gradually, many seedlings will complete the picture at the end of the flower stalk.
