Drava Valley and its surroundings were inhabited in prehistoric times. There have contained the Romans and used for navigation Drava. At the end of the 6th century it was settled by the Slavs. Colonization began in the 11th century. On settlement of the heavily affected by the establishment of the Benedictine monastery in Šentpavlu in the Lavant Valley in 1091.
