June 1979 The Chinese Artist
Nikon F, Kodax Tri-X, f5.6, 125sec.
This is my Uncle Jim Chow, my mothers’ older brother. The amazing painting in the background is one of his painting. I went to Boston to check on graduate school after I graduated from Arizona State in 1979. I was thinking about getting a master degree in design or photography. Staying with my uncles’ family I learn a lot about him and his art. My uncle emigrated from China with his wife and four kids without a dime to his name in 1968. Spending one year living with our family. They decided to move to Boston where there is a larger Chinese community; since he didn't speak any English this was a great match. He work as a Chinese cook in Chinatown so his children could get a good education. On his spare time he work on his art. I know uncle Jim was a great artist because, he got to teach at Harvard College and everyone heard of HARVARD. My mother told me it doesn't pay to become an artist,. Uncle Jim gave me this advice: "follow your dream in what you want to do with your life and you won’t go wrong". He was right! Just follow your dream. An inspiration to all
