This was a waxing crescent a couple of years ago. It is half-Moon or less you want to photograph, when you have the right contrast and it is not so bright, so you can discern the craters, etc

Thank you Catherine. 2014 was an auspicious year for astronomy. I spent hundreds of hours out in the cold with my telescope, waiting for the perfect, shimmer-less night to catch glimpses of the lunar surface, plus Jupiter and Saturn. When the lower tropospheric strata conditions are favourable (cold and crispy, no vapour or mist), you can produce images that are stunning beyond compare. The illustrated was one of them.
