The largest glacial valley in Europe is 13 kilometers long and can be seen in Serra da Estrela. Formed during the last glaciation thousands of years ago, it is an example of how these phenomena shaped nature, giving rise to unique landscapes.
In the Quaternary era, profound changes took place on the Earth's surface caused by major climatic changes, with temperatures ranging from very intense cold to more moderate values. During glaciations, the highest regions of the planet were covered by thick layers of ice that melted during interglacial periods.
It was in the last glaciation that an immense tongue of ice gave rise to the Vale Glaciar do Zêzere, an extensive area that crossed the place where the village of Manteigas is now located and that reached 300 meters in thickness. The force of the ice managed to drag giant granitic blocks, which today rest on the steep slopes.
