Built in 1913, as its name suggests, Manège 1913 is a lovely carousel found in the Champ de Mars, Paris. It features a “jeu du bague” game where children are given jousts to prize a ring as they go round, and suspended horses, with no floor beneath. The carousel runs on a manual mechanism; it is started by a man pushing it round, who then runs to the center to wind a lever. It is all done by brute force and is incredible to watch.
It radiates color, from the red poles that the horses hang on, through to the magnificent hand-carved horses, yellow, pink, blue and white, some even provided with stirrups. Each horse is named, so the children can choose from Rocky, Pinky, Zorro or Polo. There is also a four-seater carriage, with a wind chime of bells above, for those children not old enough to joust! There is no music, just the sound of children’s laughter!
