In the Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem this was the castle of the Ibelin noble family. During the Third Crusade the castle was ruined by Saladin, sultan of Egypt and Syria and founder of the Ayyubid dynasty.
Today the Ottoman-era structure, stands at the site of a fortress used by the Jewish rebels who fought the Romans in 66-70 CE, built over first in the Byzantine, and again in the Crusader period.
The structure is quite eclectic in that the architecture made use of Crusader, Roman-Byzantine and Islamic periods elements.
