Russian TAIR-3-PhS (PhotoSniper - 300mm, f4.5) on Canon EOS 600D.

The image has been edited in Photoshop, effectively turning a fairly contrasty shot into a high-contrast silhouette. The reason for this was simple - areas of high contrast focussed sharply, yet areas of lower contrast were soft.

I've yet to determine the precise cause of this. It could be lens properties, such as spherical aberration (the TAIR-3 is a fairly simple lens, with just 3 elements in 3 groups), or it could be caused by the low pass (anti-aliasing) filter on the camera sensor, which helps to prevent colour banding/pattern interference (Moiré).

Or possibly, both.
