A very common species in our grass and hay meadows, but also in brushwood is red clover, Trifolium pratense. The plants, reaching a height of 50 cm, are striking because of the pink to red color of the butterfly flowers. The threefold leaves with clear stipules also make the species easy to recognize. The flowers are visited by bees, who take care of pollination. They are attracted to the nectar in the flowers and also collect pollen or pollen.

I have a maverick red clover or two appear in my open lot each summer, but never stopped to capture a photo. I guess I’m so accustomed to them having grown up on an Iowa farm where we harvested fields of red clover every year as feed for our livestock. You just made me look at this beautiful flower from a new perspective. Thanks!
