Within the Souk of Marrakesh is the Madrassa Ben Youssef. This particular Madrassa was the work of the Saadians during the middle of the sixteenth century. The function of the madrassa was to provide lodging for students while educating them. Its’ one hundred and thirty two rooms occupy over sixteen hundred meters. The décor includes marble, plaster, wood and mosaic tilework made from individually chiselled geometric tiles set into a plaster base. It is undoubtedly one of the finest school buildings you are likely to encounter anywhere in the world.
