Mesquite trees can grow up to 60 feet tall. The shade they provide is both refreshing and life-saving. At one point in my life I was homeless with a friend over 20 years ago, and we both nurtured ourselves often on the beans of this tree. The shade provided us shelter too from very hot Arizona days. When we cooked food over fire with mesquite wood, the aroma it emitted was both soothing and gave great flavor to the food. Mesquite shrubs and trees are like sentinels in the desert, keeping watch for those who need their protection and nourishment.
