Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Urban Ecology Center at Riverside Park. The flowers are located on the side of the path down to the Milwaukee River and wildlife abounds. Wildlife consists of birds, bees, butterflies, and depending on the time of day you are there, there can be deer, beavers, and while I have not seen a big cat, I have found a deer carcass eight (8) feet up in a tree.

Time

This particular photo was taken on June 12, 2021, at 3:29 PM.

Lighting

It was a bright sunny day and the flower was at the top of the hill, so natural lighting was used.

Equipment

using a Sony A7R4 with 1.4x teleconverter on a Sony 200-600 mm lens. A tripod was used and the photo was taken with manual focus to ensure the details of the stamen (filament and anther) were in focus.

Inspiration

I was drawn to the color of the flower and the details that could be seen. We are often so busy to see the details of everything around us, that I hoped I was able to capture for others to see.

Editing

Post-processing was done in CaptureOne, adjusting the brightness and contrast, and then cropping the photo to highlight the center of the flower.

In my camera bag

Because I take wildlife, birds, and animals during the week, I tend to use the configuration above. I always have a flash, Sony 24-70mm f/2.8, a Canon 50 mm f/1.4, Canon 5D Mark IV almost always has a Tamron 70-200/f2.8, a Sigma MC-11 converter to allow my Canon Lenses to be used on the Sony camera, a Canon 16-35 mm F/2.8, and frequent I will have a Canon 100mm Macro lens. Why carry so many lenses, because I love to take pictures of people and if someone asks, I will always stop to take portraits of people or a couple.

Feedback

Use a tripod, try to find a calm day if possible. As I am not one to destroy nature, I discourage people from cutting the flowers and taking them home. If it is a winder day, you would be amazed at how well something like a pipe cleaner attached to the leg of a tripod can do to stabilize the flower without causing damage.
