Behind The Lens

Location

In my hometown of San Diego, California, USA. Specifically, the photo was captured at Ocean Beach...home of the iconic Ocean Beach Pier.

Time

Photographed not longer after sunrise on a Spring morning. The bright light of the rising sun at its particular angle for this time of year created the wonderful, contrast of light and shadow. The dramatic clouds also helped to further draw the attention to the pier.

Lighting

When the atmospheric conditions are right it can produce a striking shot.

Equipment

Nikon D610 and nikon 20mm prime lens on a tripod. Shutter speed at 13.0 seconds.

Inspiration

Growing up on the coast, I have always loved the intersection of architecture and nature. For me, one enhances the other. The contrast between the human-made and nature-made can make for a very dramatic image.

Editing

Pretty basic post-processing. Lightroom and NIK software. I darkened the shoreline and lightened the columns of the pier.

In my camera bag

Nikon D610; nikon 50mm and 20mm prime lenses; nikon 70-300mm zoom, tripod. I usually carry 2-3 filters mostly for long exposure work.

Feedback

It's about getting out to shot a lot. The atmospheric conditions are somewhat different day to day and certainly different month to month, and of course, through the year. I mostly engage in outdoor photography, and when the conditions are right you absolutely have the very good chance of capturing something dramatic and unique. Take Care and best wishes, Joseph Giacalone.
