Location
I took this photo at The Round Barn Venue in Derby, KS on the couple's wedding day. I saw the barn doors and saw how dark it was inside and just knew I could create this really cool silhouette with some great rim lighting.Time
This was taken around 3 pm in the afternoon and the sun was pretty high in the sky still.Lighting
The son was very bright but I wanted to make sure there was a good rim light around the bride as well so I set up a flash to the left on the outside of the doors pointed towards the bride.Equipment
This was shot on a Canon 5D Mark IV with a 70-200 lens and a Canon 580EXII off-camera flash.Inspiration
I was looking to create a great bridal portrait that was a little mysterious and dramatic. I wanted to still show how pretty the bride's dress was with all of the lace and the light showing through it.Editing
In this particular case as a silhouette, I didn't need to do a lot of post-processing to this image. Just some simple adjustments to highlights, shadows, and contrast are all.In my camera bag
I just upgraded my bag! I am now shooting with a Canon R6 Mirrorless and my Canon 5D Mark IV. My lenses are all Canon and include the 70-200 F/2.8 IS L, 16-35 f/2.8 L, 24-70 f/2.8 L, 50 mm f/1.4, 85 mm f/1.2, and my 100 mm f/2 macro. I recently upgraded all of my Canon flashes to Godox ad200pros and ad600 strobes too! I also have extra goodies like fairy lights, gels, small video lights, etc for when I do ring shots or I want to add color to a subject I am shooting.Feedback
Remember to expose the light outside and make sure it's bright enough to light the front of your subject but not spill into the space behind them. This barn was perfect because it was so dark on the inside and it didn't allow the light to spill in too much to ruin the silhouette effect.
