Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my brothers front yard in Queensland. The wildlife up there is incredible, and everywhere you look there’s a cute little critter posing for a shot.

Time

We went looking for these little guys at nighttime. They only come out when it’s dark, as they use the darkness as a cover from predators. You also need the right conditions. They only come out when it’s wet enough. Too dry, and the stay hidden away high in the treetops.

Lighting

This is one of my very rare photos where I use my flash. My brother was kind enough to lend me one of his diffusers.

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon D5100, Sigma 105mm Macro and SB900 flash.

Inspiration

My brother is a wildlife photographer, so I thought I’d deviate from my usual landscapes and give something different a go. Always a great learning opportunity.

Editing

I added a strip of black underneath this little frog to balance the shot a little

In my camera bag

Two cameras…Nikon D5100 and Panasonic GX8. I never leave home without my wide angle, 50mm prime and my macro.

Feedback

This shot took me many go’s. I had to figure out the right settings, incorporate a flash and a diffuser which I don’t usually use, and shoot at nighttime, which were all new for me. It was frustrating at times, but I’m happy with the results. I would encourage you to keep persevering. If you have a shot in your head that you want to take, keep trying until you achieve it.
