Behind The Lens

Location

I shot this at my apartment in Bangkok. I had been doing a shoot with this model on my balcony, and we moved inside to do a few closeups and headshots.

Time

This was late at night as it gets dark early in the tropics. Because we were using strobes and modifiers, natural lighting wasn;t required.

Lighting

This was a fairly simple two-light setup with a beauty dish on the main light and a softbox on the key. As we were doing tight shots, I was using smaller lights and modifiers.

Equipment

This was taken with my 5Div and a 24-70 f/4L. I would have been using 300w strobes with popup beauty dishes from my home studio setup

Inspiration

We had done some fairly standard beauty and glamour shots with latex and fishnet clothing. I wanted to cap it off with something more authentic and playful. I remembered a famous portrait of Salvador Dali, and I wanted to try and evoke that look here.

Editing

This was shot in colour and converted to B&W in Photoshop. While I was there I used frequency separation to clean up hotspots and shadows in the lighting, and used Delicious Retouch to do a pass on the model's skin.

In my camera bag

Mostly I shoot film so I'll have my Mamiya C-3, a few rolls of Kosmofoto Mono or Portra 160 and a Sekonic Studio Deluxe lightmeter.

Feedback

Play with lighting. Don'tl imit yourself to wide open shots with natural light.
