Location
Somewhere between Cheboygan and Ocqueoc Falls is an abandoned home. I asked the driver of the car if he could pull off the road for "a second" so I could take some quick shots. After walking up to this home I discovered, to my delight, the back wall was missing. This provided the light I needed for this shot!Time
Sunset time is my favorite and as luck would have it I had my favorite camera at my favorite time and at a wonderful location! So often my shots don't get all 3 of these things!Lighting
I was extremely rushed for this shot because I had the driver waiting in the car. Luckily I found a ledge to put my camera on for slow shutter speed options. Keeping the ISO at 100 and not having the harsh light of a flash were a plus.Equipment
16-35mm wide angle is one of my favorit lenses. D810 Nikon is a dream come true for me. Many times I have laughed out loud at the quality difference comparison to my earlier D7000. I seldom take the wide angle off this camera... I just love the combo.Inspiration
I love patina. I love the texture of weather exposed stuff. It can feel like it has been untouched by human hands for decades. Sometimes no paint is better than paint just from an artistic point of view. I totally regret not shooting more of the wallpaper when I was there. I love abstract pictures that can show up in pictures. I feel the wallpaper and chair are totally delightful to study.Editing
When editing I rarely have any idea of the finished result. I try various things in PS and see if it "feels right" to my tastes. Having strong blacks and strong whites in photos is seldom my thing so I try and avoid that as a general rule of most of my pictures. Giving pictures a clever title is part of this fun. "2020" was a difficult year for my small business and for so many people. The light in the doorway can suggest hope for tomorrow. In my camera bag
My D7100 Nikon has a 200-500mm VR and I love the combo. My D810 has either the 16-35mm or the 70-200mm most times. If I have time I'll use my cheap tripod with weights... most times no tripod. Cell phone camera only as last resort!Feedback
Hauling camera gear even when you think you are not going to need it is the advice I would give. Coming across an unplanned photo op can be some of your very best opportunities. If you don't have a tripod look for something you could use as a tripod. I wanted depth of field for this shot so I chose F11 and a slow shutter speed... too slow for handheld. Composition must not be sacrificed over a makeshift tripod however. If you have time, use a tripod in these lowlight situations. Have fun. Always!!!
