Location

I took this photo on a nature hike in the mountains outside of Soda Springs, ID.

Lighting

It was partly cloudy that day which made for softer natural light that really made the colors stand out more.

Equipment

I shot this with an Olympus E-510 with a 40-150mm lens.

Inspiration

I was walking on the hiking trail and stopped to take some photos of the stream and surrounding landscape. I’m always looking for ways to take pictures that are different than the same generic ones everyone takes of the area. When I saw the colors of the rocks in the stream I wondered how well a picture taken through water would turn out. I snapped about 10 photos trying to get the best angle with least amount of glare from the light. This was the best one.

Editing

I do minimal post-processing because I like to keep my photos as real and natural looking as possible. I do some cropping when necessary and occasionally I have to adjust the brightness slightly in some of my photos so that the colors don’t appear so flat.

In my camera bag

In my camera bag I always have a spare battery, a lens hood, non-abrasive lens cleaning cloth and 3 lenses. The lenses are 14-42mm for wider shots, 40-150mm for normal range shots and 70-300mm for longer range shots. I always have a tripod with me as well.

Feedback

Shooting through water is challenging because the water reflects everything and it’s easy to get glare. You have to play with the angles you are shooting from to get the best one. Cloudy days provide better light for shooting through water. Shooting closer to the water helps reduce the glare and helps the camera focus on your subject better. Don’t get too close to the water though or your camera will get wet. Be aware of where you are standing or kneeling to avoid slip hazards and take care not to fall in.
