This is a sacred place in Minnesota that was named Wotakuye Pan "The hill of the relatives" by the Dakota people centuries ago . It overlooks the Mississippi River and is the place where the treaty of 1851 was signed, which transferred 35,000,000 acres of Dakota land to the United States. In the winter of 1862. 1300 Dakota men and women were confined in fenced camp on the opposite side of the river where many died. Some are buried here.
