Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken on the counter in my kitchen. I used a small aquarium filled with water and dropped different objects (this mushroom, other vegetables, wine and champagne corks, a soother etc.) into the water.

Time

This was late one night after the rest of the family was asleep already.

Lighting

I had an off-camera flash from the left side and a silver reflector at the right to lighten the shadows from the single flash. The kitchen was in darkness and the flash was set at fairly low output to really freeze the motion.

Equipment

I have a Canon Eos 70D and the lens used here was a Tamron 17-50 / f2.8. The camera was mounted on my tripod, aiming straight forward. I used a remote trigger to take the shots.

Inspiration

I wanted to freeze the action just after the different objects had entered the water, with some bubbles around it. To get the picture as sharp as possible was of course important, as also the position and the orientation of the dropped object, and that required many, many trials.

Editing

I use Lightroom and Photoshop, and I cleaned up some bubbles to get a cleaner, darker background.

In my camera bag

In addition to what used here I typically have my Canon 50 / f1.4 and Canon 70-300 / F5.6 lenses, extension tubes for macro shots, polarizing filter and ND filters - plus extra batteries and memory card. Also, snacks and fruits to not get too hungry.
