Location
This photo was taken in the Harvard University district of Cambridge, MA on 04/22/2016. This was one of many visits to Boston from Durham, NC to visit my fiancé and her son while they lived there. We were touring Cambridge on foot and approaching Harvard University from two metro stations from Harvard Square. We visited a church across from Cambridge Fire Station and resumed walking toward the university. I caught the columns and arches with my peripheral vision so, very unfortunately, never learned what building they pertained to.Time
The time of day the picture was taken was between noon and 2pm. While admiring the architectural contrasts of historic and modern buildings, my peripheral vision caught site of the arches from across the street. I stopped to take three photos of the columns without paying much attention to the remaining building or precise location. The combination of the columns, arching and shadows fascinated me and the rest is history.Lighting
It was a sunny day for picture taking of any kind. The sunlight against the building created beautiful shadow effects with the arches facing outward and the shadowing facing inward toward an ample hallway that is not captured in the photo. The shadows in contrast to the terracotta and other textures are the highlight of the photo.Equipment
The equipment used was a NikonD3100 with a 55-200mm lens. No other equipment was used due to walking and an occasional stop to snap a photo. Zooming in from the opposite side of the street was required.Inspiration
The inspiration behind this photo was the columns and arches in relation to the shadowing. The interior shadowing blended very well with the exterior lit arches making the overall shapes and entire background very captivating. Additional moments of awe, in hindsight, included my peripheral vision kicking in at the right moment, otherwise the photo would have never been taken.Editing
There was no post processing involved other than downloading photos on the return to Durham, NC and deciding which was the best of the three shotsIn my camera bag
On my travels to Boston, MA I limited the camera equipment to my NikonD3100 with a standard lens, a zoom lens and two fish eyes on the odd event of using them. Issues with TSA security taught me to travel with as little equipment as possible which was all carry-on.Feedback
In this instance, the best advise is to trust your peripheral vision if/when it spots something of interest. Give yourself the benefit of the doubt in case whatever caught your attention results in a photo worthy opportunity. In a very ideal situation, take your time and absorb the moment and the entirety of the image to be photographed. Be patient, study the subject and take as many captions as possible. This advise, unfortunately, would not pass muster very well since I did the complete opposite, in this instance, and took the photos rather hurriedly. Regardless, I walked away with a wonderful memory of Boston, MA my home away from home and a photographers dream of a city. If I could do it again, I'd take all the time needed to replicate this photo plus additional building sections to get a good, overall feel for the structure.
