Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Devils Bridge in Sedona, Arizona. It is one of the most popular hikes in the area but is fairly accessible for mostly all activity levels that can be done in around 2.5 hours round trip.

Time

The photo was taken at 5:30PM in the early spring. Since it can get very hot in the summer in Arizona you'll find many people are there hiking either early in the morning or late in the evening to beat the heat not necessarily just for sunset photos.

Lighting

One of the most iconic parts of Sedona is obviously the red rock formations. The entire city is built around these natural formations which adds another layer to play around with when it comes to composition. Since it's hard to capture the colors during the day, shooting at sunset will provide the best orange hue to really help the pictures do this place justice.

Equipment

For this shoot since we were hiking the photo was taken handheld using a Sony a6300 and a 18-105mm f4 lens to keep things light and give some more range to offer some compression for the photo.

Inspiration

Because this is one of the most common places for tourists to visit in the area we naturally have avoided it due to the crowds. However, we were in the area only for enough time for one hike and decided to finally try this one out. Usually people take a photo of themselves on the bridge as there is always a long line of people waiting their turn who can snap a photo for you. However, since we were in a rush we chose to just photograph the land bridge by itself as it was more serene.

Editing

Processing for this photo along with all the others were done only through Lightroom. Like mentioned before it is hard to truly capture the colors of the red rocks in Sedona so that was one of the main areas of emphasis. Aside from the color corrections and general adjustments there wasn't really much else to do.

In my camera bag

Being relatively new to photography (2 years) there is still a lot of learning going on and that has kept equipment relatively simple. For almost all cases we will only have our 18-105 f4 lens on our Sony a6300. Unless there is the need to do only portrait photography we will switch to a faster 1.4 Sigma 30mm. Aside from that if we need something to set up with we generally take a gorilla pod due to the variability it provides. And depending on what we are going to shoot we might also bring our GoPro Hero 7 Black and our DJI Mavic Air.

Feedback

If you ever visit Sedona this is probably one of the hikes people will suggest along with Cathedral Rock. This trail is relatively easy and can be done in about 2 hours round trip. When looking for the trail we found that google maps sent us to a residential area as opposed to the main trailhead. Because Sedona has dozens of trails that intertwine with neighborhoods you need to be aware of this going into it. For the most part, there will be signs leading you towards the trail as you get closer so we suggest following those to find designated parking areas. Although some of the more popular trails have some parking lots they only fit around 20-30 cars and on busy weekends these trails can see hundreds of visitors throughout the day. Many people often park on the dirt off of the main road leading to the trail but be sure that you do not park in areas that will get your car towed. From the parking lot there is a relatively flat but rocky trail for over a mile leading to the incline portion of the trail. It is very common to find pink Jeep tours and other vehicle tours or common off road vehicles driving through this portion so be aware of that. After this section it is slightly more difficult but can be done by just about all skill levels. Once at the top you will usually find a long line of people waiting to take their pictures on the bridge (1+ hr wait). You will normally need to ask someone to take your picture but it is nice that you can get the shot with no other people in the picture. Overall this is a nice and short hike if you’re ever in Sedona and want some amazing golden hour shots!
