The current house was built in 1879 on the site of an older castle, which was probably demolished in the second or third quarter of the 19th century. Since 1910, De Bruinhorst has been in various hands and used for purposes other than private habitation. In 1942 it was purchased by the Dutch state for social purposes. First it was used as shelter for workers in employment, then it was used by the Germans as a transit camp for a group of Jews and then evacuees from the west of the country were housed there. In the early 1950s it was used to receive returnees from Indonesia. The building was designed in 1956 as a residence for nineteen Moluccan families, for which a number of barracks were also built behind the castle. The Moluccans lived there for about 12 years. The last family moved to Lunteren in 1968. In 1976 it is privately owned but Year abandoned.
