EVERY 11 SECONDS. In the common imagination, the African child is always joyful, cheerful, smiling in front of the camera and dancing with a strong sense of rhythm. The white teeth stand out on his dark face, dazzling us. We are overwhelmed by photos of volunteers surrounded by African children, embraced, smiling.
But have you ever thought how many of these children died before they started to talk?
In this period we often hear the word healthcare and we are happy about its progress, while on the African continent the situation does not improve:
- In 2017, a child under 15 died every 5 seconds: 6.3 million in total.
- In 2018, 1 in 13 children in sub-Saharan Africa died before their fifth birthday.
- In sub-Saharan Africa in 2018 the highest neonatal mortality rate was found, 28 children died per 1,000 live births, 2.5 million babies died in their first month of life in 2017
- By 2030 it is estimated that 56 million children under 5 will die.
- The risk for a woman in sub-Saharan Africa to die during pregnancy or childbirth during her life is 1 in 37
Have you ever thought about what it would be like to give birth knowing that you have 1 in 37 chance of not surviving?
And one of the most effective solutions would be really simple: “Ultrasound Scans"
What do you say, how much longer will these children have to wait?
We conclude with a phrase from UNICEF: “In the world, birth is an occasion for joy. Yet every 11 seconds, somewhere in the world, a birth turns into a family tragedy”
