Behind The Lens

Location

I worked in New Orleans, Louisiana, for 4 years and photographed multiple events, including the unique annual "Mardi Gras Indians" Parade. This very informal shot, taken as participants were assembling, gives an idea of the elaborate feathered costuming and hand-stitched imagery. I have a large collection of images from this parade and others, and look forward to sharing them on Viewbug. After being flooded out of my home in New Orleans, I didn't do photography for several years but am now returning to a review of the large number of images I've saved on external hard drives while active.

Time

11am

Lighting

Strong overhead sunlight, with little opportunity to choose best vantage point among the tightly packed crowd.

Equipment

Canon EOS Rebel T3i with EFS 18-55mm lens

Inspiration

I was attracted to the beautiful costumes of the father and his two little boys - the children in this parade are always interesting to photograph as they express so many different emotions.

Editing

The parade is held in a part of the city where backgrounds can be very challenging. Many days spent reviewing shots afterwards to find those needing cropping and work in Photoshop. While nothing has been done to enhance this particular image, others in the same collection benefited from such work - particularly emphasizing the sense of movement in feathers and twirling garments as participants danced.

In my camera bag

camera, regular, close-up and distance lenses, lens cloth and cleaner, extra charged battery, notepad for information relevant to the event.

Feedback

Be prepared to photograph subjects constantly on the move. Using my speed setting helps in capturing the movement of delicate costumes extremely well; engage with subjects whenever possible, particularly children and be prepared to have shots ruined by those who'll walk in front of you .... patient persistence
