Location
I took this photo 2 weeks after the bush fires had wreaked havoc in 2020 around NSW Australia. I had managed to contact the owner of the property and was granted permission to photograph the devastation. The owner had lost everything, house , sheds and motor vehicles.Time
I spent 5 hours taking photos on the property with over 300 shots.Lighting
The day was overcast and late in the afternoon it rained adding a sombre and moody lighting to the scene accentuating the destruction. The fire had been so intense that glass had and metal had melted and the paint on the cars had burnt to bare metal. The rain created fresh rust from reds to yellows and orange.Equipment
Being an amateur I used a NIKON D5300 & 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6 VR lens - all photos taken handheldInspiration
My inspiration came from the opportunity to record the destruction of the bush fires. I was overwhelmed by the loss on just this one property of a mans lifetime collectionEditing
At the time of taking I was very much developing my camera skills and had not discovered editing so photo is untouched. In my camera bag
I travel light - just my Nikon D5300 & 18-140 lens and very occasionally a tripod for night shots. Have recently expanded my lens array to include a 50mm & 85mm.Feedback
I consider myself lucky as I can see the photo I want before I take i, even the best angle to portray the image. The tricky part is to capture what I see mentally but as I have progressed and understand Aperture, ISO and Shutter my photos have improved. I find that by viewing regularly the work of others on Viewbug it inspires me to find a similar scene and try to mimic the angles and lighting
