Location
This image was taken in my home studio, which is my sitting room with furniture moved out of the way whenever I want to use it for a shoot.Time
This was around midday, I squeezed Joe in ahead of an interview with the BBC the same day.Lighting
This is one of my first ever shoots using a beauty dish. I had heard so many recommendations about using a beauty dish as a modifier and it has been a staple part of my lighting kit ever since.Equipment
This was shot on a Canon 700d at 26mm on a Sigma 17-50mm lens. The aperture was f13, shutter 1/200, ISO100. The shot was lit by two ancient Bowans strobes (A prolite 41 and a 82) with a beauty dish and strip box modifier.Inspiration
As a big fan of his stand up comedy, I wanted to work with Joe for a while and our schedules managed to put us in the same city thanks to the Edinburgh Fringe. Our plan was to go for a tongue in cheek glamour shoot organically moved in a darker style which was unplanned, but I loved the results.Editing
Due to the gritty lighting style, this was boosted in post with boosts to the contrast as well as some dodging and burning, and of course, conversion to black and white. In my camera bag
These days, I usually have a Canon 6d, 70-200mm 2.8 lens, a Canon 17 - 35mm 2.8 lens and a sigma 50mm 1.4 lens. I have also upgraded my studio lights since this image to 3 Bowens XMT500s which I adore.Feedback
Get a beauty dish mod, ideally with a grid attachment for extra control, and aim it at the subject from a 45degree angle. This is all you need to achieve a dark and gritty portrait in this style. If shadows are too dark, adding a reflector or 2nd light with a lower power can help balance them out or reveal more detail in them.
