Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at a local sunflower field promoting childhood cancer awareness. I’m an amateur photographer so when I get the shot I desire, it’s extremely rewarding!

Time

This photo was taken in the golden hour; about 630pm. I had just gotten my P1000 and was playing around with it getting used to all of its functions and inner workings. This shot was handheld and was shot while I was laying at a very odd angle on the ground to get the leaves of the sunflower backlit the way I wanted.

Lighting

I really like to artsy up my floral pictures. I get a picture in my head of how i want it to look in camera and then how I can play around with it in photoshop to get the art look that I’m trying to achieve. This photo was exactly how I wanted it to present both in camera and post processed.

Equipment

Nikon P1000, Manual, handheld, no flash.

Inspiration

I love all things nature. Wildlife and flowers are my absolute favorite subjects. This sunflower field is a very special place due to it bringing awareness to childhood cancer (Maria’s Field of Hope, Avon OH). It’s a magical and spiritual place and taking photos along the sunflowers here is a very special yearly event for me. My hope is that my sunflower photos from this place bring joy to all those looking at them.

Editing

I did do some post processing on this RAW image. I enhanced the highlights and really upped the clarity to bring out the fuzziness in the stems. I also added some saturation to the sky to bring up the overall warmth to the photo.

In my camera bag

I have two primary rigs. My Nikon p1000 is my go too when I’m birding for easy shooting and documenting the birds that I see. My Nikon D5600 is my Main shooting camera. I have a Sigma 100-500mm lens for wildlife. A prime Nikon 50mm lens for portraiture, a Nikon 50-160mm as an all around multi purpose lens and a Tamron f/2.8 90mm macro lens for close ups.

Feedback

My best advice is to practice, practice, practice! Get out in the field and get to know your camera and all of its features intimately. Keep a diary of shots, times of day you like, settings you prefer using at different times for different subjects and this will help you develop your own style. Make mistakes and learn from them. Read, a lot. Talk to other photographers that you admire. Keep mastering your craft but remember that each individual photographer is just that, an individual. Your style is all your own and just because someone may say it’s underexposed, or the highlights are to harsh, it’s your art. Embrace it!
