Location
This photo was taken in Taylorsville Utah at a church under the shade of a row of trees that lined a hillside.Time
The photo was taken around 11 am.Lighting
I placed my subject just on the edge of the shade from the trees out of the direct light which gave her a nice soft light on her face.Equipment
This shot was taken with a Canon 1D mklln and a canon 70-200L IS lense.Inspiration
This shot was part of a family portrait session. I had photographed this family before and fortunately for me this young lady is extremely photogenic, and I knew that I just had to get her in the correct light and things would work out. I normally do not like using grass as a background, but with her blue shirt and shallow depth of field it would work out fine.Editing
I have a set of actions that adjust color, saturation, curves and a couple of other things to give the photo a good little pop. Then I also used Portrait Professional to give her a little extra cleanliness. In my camera bag
In my bag I have a 5d mklll now as my main body, a Canon 20D for backup, lenses....70-200L IS f2.8, 24-70L f2.8, 17-40L f4.0, 85 f1.8, 50 f1.4, a canon 550 ex flash and a Vivatar 283. A couple of extra batteries.Feedback
Light is the key in any good photo wether portrait, landscape action whatever your photographing. With portraits I try get the softest light I can on my subject, find the direction of the light and position your subject so the light falls on them creating the shadows you want. Try and find the best light possible first the worry about your backgrounds. I try to keep my backgrounds as clean as possible and use as shallow a depth of field as possible also. As with everything in photography try and be as flexible as possible. Try and have no fear, some things work and some things don't. Learn from your mistakes and always push yourself to be better.
