Behind The Lens

Location

I took this image of a young male Tiger in Tadoba, India. This young male was one of 3 cubs from the Tigress Mia. It was during the heat of the day and the temperature was in the low 40s.

Time

This was taken during the heat of the day in 40+ degree temperature around 12.30 -1.00 pm in the afternoon. This tiger was having trouble relaxing and had moved away from the other family members.

Lighting

It was very hot and bright harsh light. I had to under expose the shot by -2 stops so as not to blow the whites out.

Equipment

I used a Sony a7r ii camera and a Sony 300mm f2.8 SSM ii lens with a 1.4 TC on it.

Inspiration

I wanted to get a shot of just one cub on its own. It took about an hour to finally get it. There was a lot attention on the main family from other photographers , I wanted something a little different from everyone else.

Editing

I did some cropping and the usual levels in Photoshop but it was very minimal.

In my camera bag

I always carry a spare camera body along with a 70-200mm f2.8 lens as sometimes the 300mm can get a little too close in on the shot.

Feedback

I think my best advice is to try not to take similar shots as other photographers when on a safari. I would look for something different to photograph or use a different lens so you get a slightly different perspective of the same shot.
