Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken from the stands during a horse trainer's public warm up to a show at an indoor arena in Harrisburg, PA. As a self-taught photographer, I found the mixed, artificial light and distance from the subjects a challenge that I wanted to experiment with.

Time

I was really excited to see how this image turned out as I had to shoot handheld, fully zoomed to 300mm, indoors. I hoped to capture the focus and intensity of these beautiful animals during their workout.

Lighting

The mixed, artificial lighting inside of the arena was certainly challenging for me. White balance was a little bit off, regardless of setting in camera. I finally decided that the fluorescent setting was as close as I could get and then had to correct it a little in post processing.

Equipment

This image was shot with a Canon EOS Rebel T5 and kit lens, zoomed all the way to 300mm. It was handheld, and settings were f/5.6, 1/125, ISO 6400.

Inspiration

I adore photographing animals and attempting to capture the majesty and personality they all have, in addition to their incredible physical attributes and natural beauty. Attending this event promised to be a great opportunity to practice on horses that I did not know and could not get near. I very much enjoy the challenge of working with I am given rather than having the control of a studio environment. It doesn't always work but it is a great feeling to me when I can capture an image I really love.

Editing

I did not do very much to this photo in post - some simply cropping and white balance adjustment gave me the result I wanted.

In my camera bag

At the time this was taken I was shooting with a Canon EOS Rebel T5 and kit lenses. I have since switched to the Canon 80D, but still travel light with just one or two kit lenses (Canon EF S 18-135mm 3.5 and EF 75-300mm 4-5.6).I

Feedback

If you are photographing animals, being alert to their body language and signals they give before certain behaviors is key. Being totally focused on the animal allows you to anticipate an action or movement as well as an expression or 'pose' that will probably only last a few seconds.
