Behind The Lens

Location

Hi I'm a self taught photographer. This photo has been taken in my home studio in Peterborough UK. One of my rooms in the house has been transformed into a small studio where I take most of my beauty/fashion shots.

Time

As this image was taken in the studio the time does not really matter as I’m fully in charge of the light. So I can create a day during the night and a night during a day-that’s one of the main reasons why I like working in the studio.

Lighting

To be honest with you you'll be surprised how simple the lighting can be. While my elinchrome strobes were on their way to me I had only simple cheapest lights bought on ebay: 50x70 cm softbox and 300w flash. These lights were the only one I had then so I had no choice but to use them to realize my ideas at that point of time. The lighting set up was really simple. To take this image I was using : a softbox from the right positioned a bit above the head pointing to the models face. And I used a small round shape silver reflector to fill the shadows on the neck. No other means of lighting or modifier were used.

Equipment

Taking this image I used Canon 5d Mark3 with 50mm f1.8 lens at f11, one strobe light with softbox and silver round shape reflector. It was shot on grey backdrop.

Inspiration

My wife is a make-up artist. Once she saw a picture of Nefertiti and wanted to recreate the modern look using the appropriate make-up for her video tutorial. Suddenly it came to my mind that I can use that moment to make some amazing shots for her. Since then we often do such similar projects together where she is in charge of a look and I am of light preparation and final image. We are doing so well working as a team. She is my muse!

Editing

Well, my post-processing on this image started in lightroom where I mainly do basic adjustments like exposure, blacks, saturation, sharpness, some colour correction and then I export it to the photoshop. Photoshop is the place where I do most of the retouching part. First I used liquify tool to correct some imperfections but trying not to go too far, then I retouch the skin by using frequency separation technique. After that it's time for dodge and burn and finally colour correction, saturation and sharpening. Basically that is all my work flow in post-processing.

In my camera bag

When I think now, I probably have too many things in my bag :) At the moment there is a Canon 5d Mark3 body, Canon 85 f1.8 prime lens wich I love a lot (the boceh is so nice!!!). Next Canon 50 f1.8 prime lens wich I think is one of the best lenses price wise. I also have canon 70-200 f4 L and 24-70 f2.8 L zoom lenses wich I use a lot in the studio. I also have 2 canon speed lights, yongnuo transmitter, batteries for speed lights, cables for tethering, pen to clean the lens, different colour gels for speedlights and compass:) That's about it.I guess I definitely need to take some stuff out to make my life easier when it comes to carrying it around during the outdoor photoshoot.
