This photo is actually a composite. The model was shot in an improvised studio and the background is a 3D render. Most of the time, I go for real backgrounds but in this case, it would have been quite impossible for me to get this right.Time
It was taken during the day but it actually doesn't matter for studio works.Lighting
I used 3 strobes for this setup. One Godox AD200 with a beauty dish were on the top in front of the model and 2 Godox AD600 on the sides with strip boxes and grids in order to avoid lens flares. I also used a reflector on the floor to lower the shadow areas under the hat.Equipment
I used my trusty Canon 5D mark iV with a Canon EF 16-36mm F2.8 II, a tripod from KF Concept and a remote control for the camera. I often work with a remote control as I mostly work alone. I also sometimes use an iPad linked to the camera in order to see the results from different places when adjusting the lights.Inspiration
Well I always wanted to make pictures where the model is a part of the background. I stumbled upon a few minimalistic vector based artworks and wanted to make a mix between this kind of art, 3D art and photography. I also wanted to make a kind of creature instead of a common model, that's why I built these finger tips out of paper and tape. Also there are two pair of socks over each other in order to make even longer legs than the wide angle does.Editing
Yes, quite a lot on this one. as I wrote at the beginning, the background is a 3D render but also the fingers are actually from 5 different shots. I also retouched using dodge and burn. All the reflections and shadows on the background are made in photoshop. In my camera bag
I work with a good old Canon 5D mark IV and work mostly with the Canon EF 16-35mm F2.8 II. I also have a Canon EF 14mm F2.8 prime lens and a Sigma 50mm Art F1.4 for more "conventional" portraits but I am definitely a wide angle guy. I love to play with the distortions. It's quite risky for portraits but I like that distortion of reality. For the lights, I use 2 or 3 strobes (Godox AD200 and AD600BM) and have also two speedlights for additional details. Also very important is a good tripod for symmetry and stability which increases the sharpness significantly.Feedback
Well first have a concept and turn everything towards that idea. Then it's all about lighting and post production. I often draw my ideas on paper a bit like a story board and think about all the details before I shoot. Also important is to train a bit with wide angle lenses as it is quite particular if you're photographing people. But the most important thing is the overall concept and keeping it straight to the goal.
