Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Central Park in NYC when I was there for my 21st birthday 3 years ago.

Time

I was exploring the city and stopped by Central Park to appreciate the natural beauty of the place. I found a fantastic pond with loads of waterfowl and took a snap of this lovely Mallard duck during the afternoon.

Lighting

Unfortunately the weather was a bit dull (it was Christmas/New Year so I suppose the weather's allowed to be rubbish!) but remarkably the photo came out fine with just the natural lighting. I didn't want the picture to be ruined by a harsh flash and I usually always use natural light where possible when I'm taking photos.

Equipment

I used my Fujifilm Finepix S2000 bridge camera which I got from my parents when I passed my Highers at high school. It's been a great tool for me to express my creativity!

Inspiration

I absolutely love nature and the natural world and am fascinated by birds. I love how some species have irredescent plumage which show off beautiful colours when they are hit by the light. That wee guy also looked very content, so I thought he could make people smile.

Editing

I used the auto enhance feature on photoshop to make the picture's lighting a little less white. I'm still learning what to do with software like photoshop, I will get to grips with it one day!

In my camera bag

I am very much an amateur, so I take my Fujifilm Finepix S2000 bridge camera and a special camera beanbag which serves as a tripod.

Feedback

Visit a pond with waterfowl on a (preferably) nice day. Depending on how tame the birds are, you can get a close up shot very easily. If you take food such as oats or peas you've got an even higher chance of the ducks and other species coming to see you!
