Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on a crisp October morning at Higgins Lake, MI. As the sun came up I didn't really think I was going to have a great composition since it was just a ball of fire but as the sun rose it lit up the steam coming off the warmer water.

Time

This was taken at Sunrise probably around 6:45 am or so. I remember getting there and thought all the steam on the lake looked so cool but there weren't many clouds so I was scrambling around trying to set up the shot. When the sun rose high enough it lit up the water and the steam was highlighted just enough to give it an eerie feel.

Lighting

The light wasn't that great until the sun finally rose enough over the horizon to light the steam. The light was so good being muted and all. It didn't last long as I was trying to find different angle to shoot.

Equipment

I ended up using my Canon 5D Mark III along with my Canon 70-200mm f/ 2.8L lens on a Vanguard Tripod. By using the long lens I was able to back way up and zoom in to the dock and get the steam rising off the water with the sun enlarged in the image.

Inspiration

I always try to shoot the sunset when I'm not working or I'm on vacation, unless it's totally raining or clouded over. On this morning I went to the lake as usual and could see the steam on the lake but I've never really been able to get a shot where you can actually see the steam like you can with your eyes. Today the sun rising actually lit the steam for a few minutes and with the soft light I was able to capture the steam finally where you could see it in the image.

Editing

I did a little post-processing using Lightroom. I cropped the image in a little tighter as well as brought the exposure down a stop since the sun was really bright. I sharpened it a little and this is the end result.

In my camera bag

I always have my Canon 5D Mark iii along with my Canon 24-105mm f 4.0 L lens. I always have my canon 50mm f 1.8 prime, my Canon 20mm f 2.8 prime, my Canon 100mm f 2.8 prime as well as my Canon 70-200mm f 2.8 L. I have assorted filters as well as an intervalometer for long exposures.

Feedback

My best advice is to always go to take the shot. Sometimes it's there and sometimes it's not but unless you go you'll never get it. Get out and shoot.
