Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a garage in Mountain View, California. I am always a fan of the VW Bus and obviously the lady in the photo is, too!

Time

It was in a morning close to noon, 10:49am June 3rd, 2017 to be exact, so the sun was right above us. As a result, the light was pretty soft in the building when I shot from outside of the garage door. The nice lighting allowed the camera to capture sharp images with beautiful color tones.

Lighting

It was basically all natural light reflected from outside of the garage door.

Equipment

It was shot with a Canon 5D III, EF 24-105mm f/4L lens, and an on-camera flash.

Inspiration

I feel the combination of opposite characteristics, a beautiful young woman and an old rustic legend, would make an interesting photo. It will not go wrong when you put two beauties together.

Editing

I used frequency separation technique to improve the look of model's skin. I then increased the contrast, sharpness, and saturation a bit. The background was darken to make the van and model stand out more.

In my camera bag

Canon 5D III and 7D II are the two camera bodies I carry. For the lens, Canon 24-105mm f/4L, Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L, and Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L are the regulars. I also pack a Canon 430EX Speedlight just in case.

Feedback

I think it is particularly important to build up a good rapport with the subject when shooting with models. When he/she is at ease and excited about the image, he/she will have better poses and expressions. Since there are two main subjects in this case, you can vary the perspectives and poses to create different effects. And lastly, I feel giving just enough direction to the model normally yields more natural looking pictures.
