Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on an afternoon, near Machico, Madeira Island, Portugal. Because I do not usually have friends hanging out with me I must take these photos of myself all alone, setting up the camera, the tripod, etc. Getting the focus where I'll be standing is one of the hardest parts about this whole process but my Bluetooth speaker definitely makes it less painful as the music eases it. The helmet got scratched after a motorcycle accident that happened last year. I feel like it has got a different character now. It has a story to tell.

Time

This photo was taken on a summer afternoon, under the refreshing shadow of a mountain, where you couldnt get burnt by the sun but would still feel the warmth in the breeze.

Lighting

I really wanted to make the helmet visor look darker so that the scratches it has from a motorcycle accident would be more visible, so I decided to have a lot of light in the background and stay away from the direct sunlight. The scratches have a story.

Equipment

I have used a Nikon D3200, a cheap tripod from the local store (under 30€) and a nikon 35mm f/1.8G DX. Cheap gear still makes great photos.

Inspiration

The way that the motorcycle accident made me look at life really shocked me when I realized how it had changed me. I didn't get permanently injured or anything of sort. All I have left of the accident is a few scars on my knees and on an arm as well as visual memories of that traumatic experience.

Editing

I just had to make some adaptations to a preset that I had already created. I usually use this preset when the subject is in the shadow but this time I had to make some small adaptations to it.

In my camera bag

I usually have my only camera, Nikon D3200, my 3 lens (Sigma 50mm f1.4, nikon 35mm f1.8 and sigma 70-300 f4-5.6), a SB 600 flash, and my tripod.

Feedback

The more I take photos the more sure I am that in order to take good photographies in the shadow with bright light behind is only possible if the light behind is somewhat soft. It should not be too harsh. The further away the background is the easier it will be to achieve such result.
