Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in a random town in Indiana. I wanted to do a long exposure on the road right outside of the hotel.

Time

It was like 9pm and we had been driving all day. I wanted to go out and take a few photos before going to bed.

Lighting

Because the photo was taken at night, there was less light to work with. However this worked out in order to capture the light trails of passing vehicles.

Equipment

I shot this photo on a tripod with a Nikon D500 and a 24-70mm f2.8. While the photos on this trip came out fine. That 24-70 ended up being broken. Because of that, this photos is not as sharp as I’d like it to be.

Inspiration

I don’t really know. We were on a road trip and I kinda just wanted to get out and walk around a little bit and I ended up with this photo.

Editing

I just did some basic edits in Lightroom. I’d likely edit it slightly different now as my style has changed over the past year or so.

In my camera bag

I always have my Nikon D500. While I haven’t traveled much lately. I usually have a 24-70 f2.8, a 150-600mm for wildlife, and something a bit wider like an 18-35mm f1.8 or a 10-20mm depending on the trip. I’ve also picked up a Fuji x100f which I’m excited to take on a trip. I also usually have a tripod and a variable ND.

Feedback

Take your time. Take lots of photos. Make sure you have the photo you want. Looking back, I wish I got a sharper photo than this one. This shot wasn’t going anywhere so I had no reason to rush.
