Behind The Lens
Location
Along the shores of Navajo Lake, near Duck Creek, Utah.Time
In the afternoon. After canoeing around the lake in the morning, we explored the shores of the lake in the afternoon.Lighting
Since I was shooting in the afternoon when the light is harsh, I stuck to close-up photography. I watched this bee explore from flower to flower, so I set up with the sun to my back and waited for him to go to a flower where the lighting would work.Equipment
Olympus EM-1 with a 100-300m zoom lens. Handheld. Natural lighting. 234mm. f/5.6. 1/1000.Inspiration
Bees are amazing creatures, and I love to watch them move from flower to flower. I was a fairly new photographer at the time, wanting to concentrate on wildlife photography, so any time an opportunity presented itself to practice, I took it!Editing
Standard post-processing corrections. Cropped in from original photo. Sharpened the bee to try and bring out some of the intricate details. I enhanced the color a slightly on the flower, as I love how the purple pops.In my camera bag
A telephoto lens for wildlife photography and a wide angle lens for landscape, capturing memories during hiking, and astrophotography. Tripod, filters (polarizer, ND). I'm usually out hiking, so I like to keep my equipment to a minimum!Feedback
When trying to capture subjects that are moving around a lot, don't try to follow them. Set up the composition you like and wait for them to come to you. Patience is key, but it's worth the wait!
