Location
The photo was taken in the Kicking Horse Grizzly Bear Refuge which is in the Kicking Horse Mountain Resort, 13 km up the mountain from Golden, British Columbia. This is the largest enclosed and protected grizzly bear habitat in the world and is home to Boo. Boo was born in the wild with his mother being shot and killed by a poacher in June 2002, leaving Boo and his brother, Cari, orphaned and defenseless at just five months of age. They were given a second lease on life and a new home at the Kicking Horse Grizzly Bear Refuge.Time
This was taken 1000 Mountain Daylight time (GMT-6).Lighting
It was a beautiful partially cloudy day (June 9, 2019) so the lighting was great for outdoor photography.Equipment
My travel camera, the Olympus E-M10 Mark III and the lens used was the Olympus M.Zuiko 40-150 MM 4-5.6 R Lens. No other equipment was used.Inspiration
The icing on the cake to staying in Golden and unknown to us until after we arrived, is that the Kicking Horse Mountain Resort is home to the Kicking Horse Grizzly Bear Refuge. We booked the first available a time (10 AM) to visit on a day that was scheduled to be nice. Grizzly bears tend to be more active during the cooler morning hours. We were alone watching Boo for half hour before other people arrived. He was looked directly at us for about a minute, so right time and place. He moved further into the refuge when a larger group of folks arrived who were a lot more active and louder than the two of us.Editing
There was limited post-processing applied to this photo as I got lucky! Essentially white balance adjustment, minor lighting adjustment and cropping to 5 by 4 so that the fence is not visible. I used DXO PhotoLab 3, which is my go to photo processor. IIn my camera bag
It depends on what I am shooting, if I am traveling by air and with or without my husband. My current travel camera is the Olympus E-M10 Mark III with the Olympus M.Zuiko 40-150mm f/4-5.6 R Lens, Olympus 30mm f/3.5 Macro M.Zuiko Digital ED, Panasonic HH025 LUMIX G Lens 25mm, f/1.7 ASPH, M.ZUIKO ED 14-42 mm f/3.5-5.6 Pancake EZ and the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 II R Lens. Before my next trip I will be adding a few new lens as I have decided that this camera works well for trips and doesn't weigh too much. When at home and for outdoor photography, I use a Canon 5D Mark III, EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM, Canon 100-400mm L IS II, Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM, Canon EF 85mm f/1., Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM and a Tamron 90mm f/2.8 VC USD R2 Macro. I have several others but these are the ones I primarily use.Feedback
Patience, sitting or standing still and quietly; and most important as far away from other people whenever possible. Also go visit Boo at the Kicking Horse Grizzly Bear Refuge at the Kicking Horse Mountain Resort in Golden BC.
