You need a lens with good flare resistance to shoot into the sun. Oftentimes prime lenses have better flare resistance than zooms, because primes have less glass. Also, when shooting into the sun, you want to maximize the dynamic range of your camera's sensor, which can be accomplished by shooting at the very lowest ISO. Shoot in raw, shoot in manual exposure, and use the histogram when you review the image and "expose to the right" of the histogram (meaning expose just to the point of clipping hi-lights) for optimal exposure. This will enable you to bring back detail in shadows in post.
