I could barely see the bird without flash... I didn't 'correct' the red eye as the effect was interesting. I don't think it harmed the animal and he was very patient as I walked around the base of the sycamores, trying to get an unobscured view.

Hi,
You are right that one flash doesn't particularly damage the bird's eye. However, if there were a group of photographers all firing off their flash guns then there would be some damage. Also, you shouldn't use when attempting to photograph an owl (or any bird) in flight. This is because in that spilt second as the flash goes off and their eyesight recovers it is possible they may have flown quite a distance without being able to see their way and collide with an object causing injury.
