We shot this in my studio, near the end of a long day of shoots. I had just opened the door and saw all that great light streaming in, and thought this would make for a fantastic rimlight/backlight... I still think I was right. :)Time
This is definitely a current favorite image of mine, it came together almost exactly as I imagined it would, the sun had just started to come down in the sky, it was between 3-4pm on a nice sunny afternoon.Lighting
I got a little bit lucky with the timing and spacing of the sun coming down between the two buildings, but after balancing all my settings to get everything just how I wanted it, the sun really did all the work to carve out her shape the way it did.Equipment
I shot this with my Canon 6D, using my 70-200 2.8 L series, with nothing but natural light streaming into the doorway.Inspiration
I had actually just opened the door to the studio as we were shooting on the wall beside it, and it was getting a little warm inside, when I looked out and saw how the light was coming through, and that we had just been shooting her in that sweater, I thought it might look really good to have the sunlight create her shape through the sweater, in just the way it did, sometimes I get lucky that way! :)Editing
There's some slight colour toning in this image to cool it down just a little bit, and de-saturated the image a little as well, but in terms of exposure and other retouching, almost nothing else was needed on this shot, all the elements fell into place really nicely... Sunshine, it's good stuff! :)In my camera bag
Lately, I've added a small drone to my go-bag, but almost always, my 70-200 is attached to my 6D, I shoot about 80% of everything with that lens, I like how it makes things look. I do have a few primes too if I'm looking for that ever-popular bokeh-licious background. I keep a 100mm macro 2.8, and a 50mm 1.4, and the jack-of-all-trades 24-105 for when I actually have to do some work! :) Other than that, there's a back-up body, 1 speedlight, and a set of gels. That's heavy enough for location work.Feedback
If you wanted to get a little more light on the subject, I suppose you could put a v-flat in front of her and let that sunlight bounce back onto her front too, but at the time of day I was shooting, I decided it was unnecessary, other than that, just find a great big rope-y, or loosely knit, sweater that will filter the sunlight through it, and after that you just need someone with the right curves to make it all look good... then get her to smile. :)
