I took this photo in Bloomington, Indiana. After two failed attempts at ballooning due to weather, we had perfect conditions and it was a go.Time
This was in the evening near the end of October last year.Lighting
Our whole hot air ballooning experience took place during the "golden hour," in which the lighting was perfect. The way the balloon was lying on the ground while inflating was purely coincidental in the way that the light shone through, making the pilot a silhouette.Equipment
This was an impromptu shot -- I just aimed and went for it, and was so surprised by the results. It had the potential if I had planned it out with certain settings, better camera, etc., but sometimes you use what you have and be okay with it. And I am!Inspiration
I was almost overwhelmed by the enormity and power of the colors and size of the balloon and lighting, and the little shape of a man silhouetted against the far wall of the balloon.Editing
I used a tad bit of contrast and increased the saturation a little. Being a novice that's about all I know how to do right now!In my camera bag
I usually have a GoPro and a Panasonic Lumix and extra batteries. I've now upgraded to a DSLR camera so now I have to tote around a bunch of lenses and "junk" like that.Feedback
Always be on the lookout for anything eye-catching. Point-and-shoot cameras can still capture amazing moments that you may miss if you're fiddling around with different camera settings. One thing that I am still working on is simply putting the camera down and enjoying the people and places around you. Just be in the moment!
